THE COMMUTER – KAWASAKI ER6N ’15

Written by Aries

Since its release in 2006, Kawasaki’s ER-6N or Ninja 650, has been a go-to choice for riders seeking a practical, no-frills, mid-sized commuter bike. Its popularity, however, has a lot more to do with its reliable and economical nature than it does its relatively unremarkable appearance.

With a twin parallel engine as its core, a well-designed chassis, and generally capable running gear, we set out to give the ER-6N a visual redesign with as much different character as its lively mid-sized twin.

The Kawasaki’s front-end was binned to make room for a set Ohlins Front End from Ducati with refreshed internals and double Sunstar disc setup complete with a Brembo caliper. The factory subframe was lopped off and replaced with a new one-off unit made to support the tail section that we can drop the battery and electronics housing underneath.

For the new bodywork our in house metal magicians shaped 3.2 mm aluminum plate to form the bikes with an unibody style. An all dark grey paint from Sikkens finished with doff clear coat from same product was the final finishing touch. To match the finish of the front end, a set of Ohlins Progressive Rear Shock was mounted up rear and the original casting wheels replaced with TK Japan wheels 18×3.00 inch at the front and 17×500 inch at the back and wrapped with Shinko E805 Tire 120/80-18 and 150/70-17.

With such dramatic improvements in body and suspension we sought to complete the handling package. For this we added Nissin Japan front master cylinders Then all of the bikes lighting was replaced with a modern style aftermarket units. Completing the last project, a new handlebar and classic grip was selected to provide ‘the enjoyment of riding’.

Performance wise the ER6N had more than enough grunt for navigating Indonesia’s congested city streets, so the engine only saw a slight re-tune to suit the custom 2 in 1 exhaust system.

Overall we have done an ace job of delivering a solid build with a tight, cohesive visual theme. And, while it might be more street tracker than flat tracker, it’s hard to deny it’s a custom bike more appealing to the eye than another Kawasaki ER6N.
